MEET YOUR MENTOR

Hi, I’m Graham and I spent 25 years building up and running my own Chartered Accounting Practice.

I had the privilege of looking inside 300+ businesses every year and got to see the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Too many times I saw business owners working really, really hard. Sacrificing family life, getting stressed and still not getting the financial rewards they deserved. They didn’t own the business, the business owned them!

 

I went through that stage myself. Until I discovered the secret of Business Bottlenecks, which in turn allowed me to set up my own business to run itself.

 

In January 2009 I took a 9-month vacation and travelled the world with my wife and two sons. (My younger son turned 9 on the overnight train between Bangkok and Chiangmai in Thailand!)

I got back and there wasn’t a place for me as an accountant in my firm anymore. Fortunately, enough of my clients saw what I’d done and wanted help changing their businesses!

In 2021, I sold the business to Paul, my employee who ran the business while I was travelling. Since then, I have written a book called “Practice Makes Profit” about businesses I have helped, I’ve spoken at national conferences, been interviewed on several international podcasts and have continued to help even more businesses thrive.

It seems the combination of understanding the numbers, understanding Bottlenecks and building your own business to run itself is a powerful mix.

It's not what you do, it's where you do it. Every business has areas of weakness that are limiting its ability to make money and give you the life you deserve. Fixing anything else is a waste of time and money.

 

Our process will systematically identify and fix these weaknesses in order to have the biggest impact.

 

The NZBM 3-Phase Mentorship Program is based on a progressive monthly system and direct collaboration with you, the business owner.

Phase 1 focuses on the Profit and Cashflow needed to give you financial freedom.

 

You discover the one true Bottleneck that limits how much money your business can make. You’ll then go through a process to ensure the Bottleneck is making the most money it possible can. 

 

The next step is to make sure the rest of the business is supporting the Bottleneck to run efficiently. Only then do you look at investing in expansion and adding capacity.

Phase 2 is about streamlining processes and systemising your business to give you the reliable future outcomes needed to give you freedom from worry.

 

You’ll build your own Forward Radar to ensure steady upcoming work. You’ll learn why you need to have three different cash buffers. You’ll learn how to control your business with a few key measures and what to do when they aren’t right. And you’ll learn to build systems and processes that allow your staff to make great decisions when circumstances change.

 

You‘ll also learn why forecasting doesn’t work, how dangerous the wrong KPIs can be, and the number one reason delegation fails to give good results.

TIME FREEDOM

Phase 3 is about building enough trust to hand over the running of your business to the team, so you can have time freedom. 

 

You’ll learn what to look for in your replacement, how to teach your team to solve problems for themselves, what the best competitive advantage is and why you need a strategy. 

 

Most importantly, you’ll build the trust needed to let go.

The full programme begins with improving cash flow and profit to give you financial freedom. The second stage is to install the systems, processes and visibility needed to give you reliability and freedom from headaches.

THE MINDSET

Business ownership is essentially a journey that is all about gaining financial freedom, freedom from worry and time freedom.

These are in a deliberate order.

You cannot take (much) time off if you have problems to deal with. You cannot have mental freedom if you have no cash.

But it's more than just wanting financial freedom, freedom from worry and time freedom.

GROW YOUR BUSINESS

To grow your business you will need to grow yourself.

You will need to learn new skills and new ways of thinking, and to leave some things behind.

What worked for you when you were "on the tools", won't work when you are managing workers.

What worked for you when you were managing workers won't work when you have your own managers.

There is a mindset shift that needs to take place.

There are a series of stages that businesses go through and as every business is unique, can start at different stages.

Some business owners are partway along the journey already.

 

And of course it's not compulsory to get to completely "hands-off".

With the structured approach outlined, you can step on and off where-ever you feel comfortable, and you can always resume the journey later if you choose.

Mentorship

BUSINESS MENTORSHIP PROCESS + OPTIONS

Many people get into business with the idea of working really hard for seven years, then selling up and retiring.

 

20 years later and they are still seven years from retiring.

If you went into business looking for financial freedom, freedom from worry, and the time to do what you wanted, when you wanted, then this business mentorship process is for you and will ultimately enable you to have your business working for you, rather than you working for your business.

BUSINESS MENTORSHIP PROCESS

All the mentorship phases start with gathering some information.

 

I’ll do some number crunching, analyse your existing systems and KPIs or look at your staffing structure in the background. 

 

The first monthly meeting will generally be 2-3 hours. This will be a chance for us to fill in the gaps and find some low hanging fruit to make an immediate impact.

 

Following this, the weekly/bi-monthly or monthly meetings will generally be between 1 and 2 hours. 

 

Less is more. My biggest challenge is not to overwhelm you. If you can work on one thing between meetings, you will make significantly faster progress than trying to do too much.

Face-To-Face meetings will have to be by Zoom unless the person lives within reasonable driving distance.
